Police Seize Illegal Chinese Liquor Worth NPR 1.7 Million in Humla
Nepal Police in Humla district have confiscated a large quantity of illegally imported Chinese liquor during a targeted anti-smuggling operation in the remote northern region of the country. Acting on specific intelligence, the Humla District Police Office intercepted the consignment as it was being transported through informal mountain routes commonly used for cross-border trade.
According to police officials, a total of 351 cartons containing more than 4,200 bottles of Chinese liquor were seized. The estimated market value of the seized alcohol is approximately NPR 1.7 million. Authorities stated that the liquor had entered Nepal without customs clearance and was intended for illegal distribution within domestic markets.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of the district police command, with officers monitoring traditional smuggling trails used to bypass official border checkpoints. Police believe the liquor was being smuggled to meet demand in restricted or high-tax markets, either within Nepal or potentially for re-export into neighboring regions.
Officials have expressed concern that such illegal imports undermine government revenue, distort fair competition for licensed liquor businesses, and pose potential public health risks due to the lack of quality inspection and regulatory oversight. Smuggled alcohol often bypasses safety standards, increasing the risk of adulteration and unsafe consumption.
Law enforcement agencies have indicated that surveillance along northern border routes will be intensified, particularly in districts like Humla where rugged terrain makes monitoring difficult. Police have also urged local communities to cooperate by reporting suspicious movements and illegal trade activities.
The seized liquor has been taken under custody for legal processing, and further investigation is underway to identify the individuals and networks involved in the smuggling operation. Authorities reiterated their commitment to curbing illicit alcohol trade across Nepal through sustained enforcement and inter-agency coordination.
